Weather

Purpose 

Provide support during times of inclement weather by gathering weather spotting and post-storm initial damage assessment reports. 

Situations 

During periods of potential significant weather events, a team of “Weather Leads” provides monitoring support on a rotating basis. 

Key responsibilities of the Weather Lead position are: 

• Follow Established Guidelines for Weather Event Callout 
• Facilitate Communications Radio Operators Establishment of Net Operations on Amateur Radio and EMA Public Service bands 
• Alert EMA Staff and EOC Support Members to the Weather Event Operation 
• Assist in coordination of operations with the EOC once it’s up and functioning 

Weather Spotters establish themselves in an observation mode at either a fixed location (residence, business or field location) or mobile area and report to the EOC if a severe weather event, such as a tornado, severe thunderstorm, or flash flood occurs where the spotter is located. 

Specialized Skills / Training / Certification / Licensing Requirement 

All members are required to attend a National Weather Service Severe Weather Spotting course at least once every 2 years. Additional training as provided by NWS or private entities is encouraged. 

Weather Leads must complete EMA Weather Lead / Operations training and demonstrate leadership capabilities.
